Assemblyman Joseph Lentol on legislation that would lift the ban on professional MMA:
I've supported it in the past and I continue to support it. It’s a very popular sport, most states have legitimized it, and we’re left out in the cold in New York. It occurs here now underground, and underground fights aren't safe. We need to make it safer, like we try to do for boxing and other sports. If it stays underground, a lot more people would be hurt. We ought to regulate it, we ought to legitimize it, and we ought to get tax revenue from it.

I have serious concerns about the impact of a sport such as Mixed Martial Arts on the mental and physical health of participants, particularly at a time when we are just beginning to understand the long-term effects of sports-related injuries like concussions. However, as with any other bill that crosses my desk during the legislative session, I will carefully consider the merits of a proposal to legalize the sport.

Legislative Leanings: Assemblyman Michael Benedetto on MMA

Thanks to Speaker Sheldon Silver resigning over corruption charges and Assemblyman Carl Heastie - an MMA supporter - taking his place, the bill that would lift the ban on professional MMA in New York has some legislative traction. Now, for the first time in years, we can start playing the politics game and begin counting who in the Assembly would likely vote "yes". But who, beyond the 2015 MMA bill's 53 sponsors, would give their thumbs up?
To answer that, The MMA Journalist has reached out to every Assembly member whose name isn't attached to the bill and asked for their stance on the matter. Not everyone has responded, and I don't expect them all to, but I will post the responses of those that do here.

Pressure is Building for Amateur MMA Oversight in New York

New York's amateur MMA scene is completely unregulated by the state, but maybe for not much longer. According to a report by the Niagara Falls Reporter, a local kickboxing champ named A.J. Verel has asked the legislature to step in and create a commission that oversee all things to do with amateur fighting.

Tapology Tackles New York MMA Fighter Rankings

Fighter rankings are a tough nut to crack, as no matter what you do, someone is going to get offended because they're not ranked high enough (or at all) and they now want to punch you in the face the next time they see you. Which is why I respect the effort the folks at Tapology put into their rankings of the New York amateur (and pro, such as it is) MMA scene. Granted, Tapology's methods seem to be purely statistical in nature (i.e., based solely on win/loss record and not on subjective things like strength of competition and overall bout performance), but it took work to amass the data and crunch it, so props to them.
